Just before leaving Murchison today I wandered down to the St Peter Chanel Catholic Church which sits on a bit of a bluff at the end of Fairfax Street, overlooking the Buller River.
The church was originally built in 1922 I believe, and suffered minor damage in the 1929 Murchison earthquake. However it was severely damaged in the 1968 Inangahua earthquake and had to come down after severe cracks appeared in the concrete structure.
I can find no information about the church’s rebuild, but presumably it was rebuilt to its original design.
It’s a “cutie” – well worth a look.
